Skilled Migrant Category: New Zealand announces Certainty to visa holders

New Zealand Government has been announced recently new one off 2021 residence path way and good news is that now it will provide certainty up to 165,000 migrants, in other words work visa holders will be able to stay in New Zealand permanently.

Let’s understand first what is Skilled migrant category? And how you can apply?

The Skill Migrant Category Visa, also known as the SMC resident visa, is based on a points system that considers factors such as age, qualifications, work experience, family connection, and a skilled employment offer. To be eligible for this type of visa, you must also be 55 years old or younger and meet all English language, health, and character requirements. Under this category you can add your partner children too.

The Process: How to apply?

1. An EOI (Expression of Interest) must be submitted to Immigration New Zealand by the applicant.

2. After careful consideration, Immigration New Zealand will send the applicant an invitation to apply for a Skilled migrant category visa (SMC)

3. The applicant will then submit his completed application along with all required evidence and the Skilled Migrant Category form.

4. The decision will be made by Immigration New Zealand.

New residency visa announcement:

The New Zealand Government announced a new one-time residence visa pathway for some temporary work visa holders currently on September 30, 2021.

The new resident visa will also allow employers to keep settled, skilled, and scarce migrant workers, up to 165,000 migrants will get certainty they shall get the permanent residency in New Zealand

Over 5,000 health and aged care workers, approximately 9,000 primary industry workers, and over 800 teachers will be able to live in the country under this visa.

Streamlined application process necessitating the fulfilment of health, police, and security criteria.

The vast majority of applications will be approved within a year, the 2021 Resident visa will be available in two stages, with the first group of applicants able to apply on December 1, 2021.


To be eligible for the visa applicant must have been in New Zealand on 30 September 2021

Also one should meet the following criteria:

-Should live more or for three years in New Zealand

- Earn $27 or more per hour

- or worked on position of scare list

Eligible visas:

Post study work visa

Talent Visa

Essential skills work

Long term skill shortage visa

Also applicant must be meet the health criteria too. One relief is that applicant will not need a police verification criteria unless immigrant office request.
